Google will completely cover Kansas City with fiber optic cables, provide 1Gbps internet

Last year Google announced a new project: covering an entire city with fiber optic connections and providing its citizen with internet connection 100 times faster than before. Naturally there was no shortage of applicants – 1100 cities all over the US wanted to have a taste of the 1Gbps internet speeds.
gsmarena 001 Google will completely cover Kansas City with fiber optic cables, provide 1Gbps internet
Google took their time reviewing the applications and announced today that the lucky winner is Kansas City, Kansas. A development agreement with the city has already been signed and work on the actual project has already started.
The Google internet service should provide speeds of up to 1Gbps, while costing as much as current broadband options. Its deployment in Kansas City should begin by the end of this year and Google will start offering its service in the first quarter of 2012.
And if you are living in any of the cities that applied, but weren’t picked, you shouldn’t worry – Kansas City is the first, but certainly not the last stop on this project. Plus that move by Google will certainly make other internet provider pick up their game and force them to provide faster speeds at lower price.

Canada will also get the dual-screen ICONIA in April, but Acer won’t be offering the Iconia on pre-order there.

Mozilla releases Firefox 4 Mobile final for Android and Maemo, get your hands on it now

If you haven’t tried the release candidate of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo which Mozilla released a week earlier, now you don’t have any excuse not to download the final version unleashed just hours ago. Firefox 4 Mobile is a true reincarnation of its desktop brother with its support for add-ons, tabs, Firefox sync and it comes with serious speed improvements.
gsmarena 002 Mozilla releases Firefox 4 Mobile final for Android and Maemo, get your hands on it now
While tabbed browsing isn’t something we haven’t seen before, add-ons and sync are some seriously cool features that you should give a try – if you are an Android or a Maemo guy, that is. Unfortunately, those of you with lower end devices won’t be able to download the browser. Nevertheless, you should give it a go.
Mozilla is really proud of the synchronization abilities of the latest version of Firefox. With Firefox 4 Mobile you can sync all the passwords, tabs, history, bookmarks and form data without any hassle, making it perfect to browse anything on the go without having to go through the process of inputting everything from scratch.
Here’s a video showing the powers of the Mozilla’s mobile browser.
As you can see, syncing, add-ons and tabbed browsing don’t really tell the whole story. Firefox Mobile also has a clever way of interacting with tabs, bookmarks and plugins. Don’t wait any longer and head straight to the Android Market or Mozilla’s website (for Maemo users) to get it while it’s hot.

Google is preparing a Nexus Tablet, LG will manufacture it

After a few smartphones, Google has reportedly decided to release a tablet with their own branding. The Nexus Tablet will be running the slate-friendly Android 3.0 Honeycomb and will be manufactured by LG.
gsmarena 002 Google is preparing a Nexus Tablet, LG will manufacture it
Rumor has it that unlike the Nexus One and the Nexus S, the Nexus Tablet won’t have a twin sold under its manufacturer branding. So could this mean that Google will finally be trying to make some good sales on their own device? The company didn’t try very hard with either Nexus smartphone, but maybe things will be different with tablets.
The same source also claims that devices running Android versions 2.x won’t be able to upgrade to 3.0. Now Samsung said a while ago that it will bring Honeycomb update to its 7” Galaxy Tab eventually so we are not sure what to believe here.
Still it would be a very interesting to see what happens if Google decides to directly compete with its Android partners. Sony Ericsson and Motorola are tied to the platform, but HTC and Samsung have other options and might decide to take their business elsewhere if this happens.
This does seem pretty unlikely though and we will probably end up with another over-priced device for the Droid purists to purchase.

Nokia finally reveals its plans for the Symbian^3 future

The Nokia vice president Purnima Kochikar has jus released an open letter to developers, revealing the company's plans about their Symbian^3 platform. Apparently the Finns are planning to continue releasing new smartphones running on Symbian^3 as well as regular updates for the OS itself.
Those new devices should bring 1GHz+ CPUs and faster GPUs to Symbian^3. Kochikar also says that the company will make full use of its expertise in location-based services and imaging to make its new Symbian^3 smartphones more attractive.
Of course, it's the UI that's currently holding the Symbian lineup back, but Nokia plans to do something about that too. There are several updates that should dramatically improve user experience in the pipeline. The first one is pretty major, delivering a brand new home screen, new flexible widgets, new icons (pictured left), a faster browser, new Navbar and a fresh look and feel to Ovi Store and Ovi Maps, including integration of social media services in Ovi Maps.
That first update should come some time in the summer. In fact several of its components have already made their way to the Nokia C7 Astound that should hit T-Mobile US in a week.
Unfortunately, once again we didn't get the answer to the most important question - how long will the Symbian^3 support last? Apparently Nokia will only be able to answer this once they enter the WP7 market and see how things go there.
Still the company promised that it won't be dropping the Symbian^3 support immediately even if their first devices with the Microsoft turn out to be a huge success. Nokia says that it will be offering some support until the natural lifecycle of the Symbian^3 smartphones has ended in an attempt to convince users to switch to the WP7 after that.
On some markets such as China, India, Russia and Turkey, the Symbian^3 smartphone platform will continue to be marketed alongside Windows Phone 7.

iPhone 5 or not, the Apple WWDC is good to go for 6 June

Apple has officially announced the date for its annual Worldwide Developer Congress traditionally held in San Francisco. The event will start on June 6 and the iPhone 5 will probably be the star of the show.
The conference consists of many technical sessions, seminars and talks. But as far as consumers are concerned, the main focus is on the expected announcement of the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4GS (or whatever it’ll be called).
The announcement of the next generation iPhone seems like a sure thing. There are many speculations revolving around the next big iSmartphone – some trustworthy and some plain fiction. What we can safely assume is that the Apple A5 dual-core chip, that’s featured in the iPad 2, will land in the next iPhone. The same goes for the graphics performance.
The screen is where most changes are expected. Whether it will be AMOLED or LCD, would the pixel density remain on the same Retina level or will we see a bigger display with the same resolution?
Well, we guess all we can do is wait and be on the lookout for juicy rumors and pictures.
The message on the event invite is the other attention grabber. The future of Mac OS X and most importantly iOS invites us to think that iOS 5 may still make it before fall.

iOS 5 might be pushed back for a fall release, iOS 4.3.1 gets a tethered jailbreak

The iOS 5 is likely to be released in the fall instead this June at the WWDC. There are a few reasons to believe so and the first one is we heard nothing about a new iOS version around the iPad 2 announcement.
gsmarena 001 iOS 5 might be pushed back for a fall release, iOS 4.3.1 gets a tethered jailbreak
Then there is this thing about the Apple’s change of strategy about the MobileMe services and their possible integration with the iOS 5 – which is a lot of work to achieve.
There are some other rumors that we didn’t pay attention so far, but they just might turn out true. They are about a new iPad release this fall, which will differ somehow than its predecessors. It’s likely the new iOS 5 be released with the new iPad as well.
It is said that the new iOS 5.0 will be a major revamp and should have some heavy cloud integration.
I have already tried the OS X Lion and the thing that grabbed me first was the UI touch optimization. The scrolling is now the same as in the iOS (read: opposite of what you have been used to), the new Launchpad is the same as the iOS homescreen and the multi-tasking gestures are the same as those in the iOS 4.3.
It seems there is some kind of bridge building here, but the information is quite scarce at this time. One can only guess if we won’t be seeing an Apple tablet running (or dual-booting) the fully fledged OS.
According to TechCrunch’s reportedly trusted sources, the iOS 5 is definitely heading for a fall launch. So the new iPhone 5 will be released with an iOS 4.x version, but the iOS 5 might be showcased with it as well.
Everything is based on rumors right now, but they all make sense. I guess the WWDC in June will clear a lot of those up.
In other news, the newly released iOS 4.3.1 has already been jailbroken. It’s a tethered jailbreak though, dependent on the MacOS-only Pwnage Tool. If you are interested, check this guide.
The iOS 4.3.1 is a minor update that fixes a few bugs and closes the previous jailbreak exploit.

This green XPERIA Android mascot really knows the robot dance

Android has legs, hands and it already got some thumbs. What’s next then? Well, it can always try to dance.
gsmarena 001 This green XPERIA Android mascot really knows the robot dance
The video you are about to see is shot in Taiwan in front of an XPERIA Arc stand. I doubt that this dancing robot was meant to star in a viral video clip, but it’s exactly what this video has turned into.
Here is the video:
I am not sure if the guy inside the costume is drunk or high but his moves are just hilarious.

Opera mini v6

Today, Opera took another step forward to solidifying their place as the mobile web browsing leader with the release of the new versions of their two mobile browsers. Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11 are immediately available for download on a large number of platforms.
Opera Mobile 11 utilizes the full power of HTML5, Flash (where supported) and the Opera Presto browser engine, which is used in the desktop version of the Opera 11 browser.
Both the Mini 6 and Mobile 11 now support pinch-to-zoom, improved scrolling, panning and zooming, and a share button, which let's you quickly share any page to Facebook, vKontakte, My Opera, and others.
We took the two new browsers for a spin and we have to say we are pretty satisfied with their performance. We have seen smoother zooming and panning, but it's good enough not to become irritating.

Opera Mobile 11 screenshots
The new Opera Mobile 11 is compatible with Windows 7 tablets, too, so if you happen to have one you might consider giving it a try.

Opera Mini 6 screenshots
The Opera Mini 6 is available for the Android, Blackberry, Symbian/S60 phones and the J2ME framework. As for the Opera Mobile 11 you can get it for Android, Symbian, MeeGo, Maemo and Windows 7 desktop (don't confuse it with Windows Phone 7). Happy browsing!
Google’s obviously reluctant to release the source code of Android 3.0 Honeycomb to the public. The company has just announced its decision.

gsmarena 001 Google keeps Honeycomb source code tight to chest, doesnt like phones getting it

This may come as a shock to many developers and users alike. But the logic behind this move isthat Google doesn’t want Honeycomb to land on smartphones.
Speculations have been circling about the next version of Android for smartphones, particularly about it receiving some Honeycomb magic. That will be the Ice Cream, which is said to be released this summer, hopefully.
Google vice president for engineering, Andy Rubin, has said that if the company releases the source code for Honeycomb, there will be no stopping developers from porting it to mobile phones, which will create a bad user experience. He also added that Google doesn’t have an idea if it could ever work on phones.
Still he said that Google hasn’t changed its strategy for Android and it will remain open source. Kinda confusing, isn’t it?
Still I can’t help but see the logic behind Google’s actions on this one. The lack of a differentiation between mobile and tablet UIs is something I’m not too fond of. It’s the case with the iPad and perhaps delivering different experiences on the two platforms is a better thing to do. What do you say?

This Is the Battle Between Ipad Vs. Galaxy Tab 10.1

Clearly in my eyes is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 much better than the Apple Ipad 2.
